Chilli Cheese Dog
VegOut’s Chilli Cheese Dog is the meal of all street meals. Although it doesn’t look vegan at first glance, it’s made with a seitan hot dog base, topped with vegan chilli, and a delicious vegan cheese sauce. Served with a side of local Covered Bridge potato chips, this is the decadent meal of any junk food vegan’s dreams.
The base of the chilli cheese dog from VegOut was a seitan hot dog. It was flavourful, and had a slightly bready taste. It wasn’t too meaty or smokey, which I can really appreciate. We also loved the bun that it came in. It was a long, fluffy, toasted sub bun, slathered in vegan cheese sauce and chilli. It absorbed the flavour of the chilli so well!
The flavour of the chilli topping was amazing! Even the way it smelled was unreal! The chilli appears to be made with quinoa, corn, black beans, tomatoes and lots of spices. It paired well with the thick cheese sauce on top, neither overpowered each other. Together they reminded me of nachos, or something you’d dip tortillas in. We honestly could have went for a bowl of the toppings alone!
The salted Covered Bridge chips that were served on the side were also really good. For kettle chips, they weren’t too crunchy. Plus they were the perfect side for scooping up fallen chilli cheese!
As I mentioned previously, the texture of the seitan hot dog was quite bready – like all seitan. But it was also really dense and firm, just like you’d expect the texture of a ‘real’ sausage to be! I was surprised at how different the texture of one seitan format to the next could differ. We’re impressed with how realistic it looked!
The texture of the bun was probably my favorite part of the chilli cheese dog- since I am obsessed with bread and all. It was so soft and toasted to perfection. Awesome dipped in the chilli cheese topping. I think that was one of my favorite parts about this dish, everything just seemed to go together well.
The chilli cheese topping was less liquidy than I expected chilli to be. I always expect chilli to be more of a soupy texture, but I’m glad this wasn’t the case here. The chilli was thick and not too liquidy, and was made with chunks of corn, black beans, tomatoes and quinoa. It was all really soft and rich!
The same thing goes for the cheese sauce, it was really thick, creamy, and soft! It almost looked like mustard at first but I was pleasantly surprised at how creamy and cheesey it was.
The presentation of VegOut’s chilli cheese dog is perfect – as you can probably tell from the pictures. First of all, it looks classic, and cute af. You’d never guess it’s vegan because it looks like real, decadent street food! From the squiggle of cheese on top, to the unconventional potato chip side, this plating is so classy.
The presentation of VegOut’s chilli cheese dog was also practical! Everything came in a perfectly sized, compostable bowl. We love that they use the sustainable option! It also worked really well for the shape of the meal. Even though it got slightly messy, and chilli cheese fell off the hot dog, it had a place to land where it could still be salvaged. It basically turned the chips into nachos! I think this functionality is really important to consider when ordering food from a food truck, so well done VegOut!
The chilli cheese dog from VegOut was $9 (tax in). For a vegan meal of this size and quality, we think this is a great deal! The seitan hot dog was huge and filling, and since it came with a side of chips, it was like a full meal! So worth the price. Thanks VegOut for offering fast and affordable vegan options!
