Chickpea Favorite!

Vegan Haven Fredericton

Vegan Haven Fredericton is a new vegan desserts vendor here in Fredericton, NB. They have a stall at the Cultural Market, which is open every Saturday 9-2pm. Before they were even open for business, I heard about them on Instagram. I was anticipating new vegan desserts, but my expectations were pretty modest. On their opening Saturday just last weekend, we heard they were giving out free samples of their products so we had to stop by. It’s hard to say no to free vegan whoopie pies, that’s for sure!

Safe to say, my expectations were shattered when I finally tried Vegan Haven’s goods. Double chocolate caramel cookies, chocolate cupcakes, whoopie pies and more. Their selection could not have been more perfectly catered to my chocolate obsession. And all vegan!! I’ve had some decadence in my day – as someone who grew up eating death by chocolate ice cream while all the kiddies ate their bullshit cotton candy. So I can confirm, this shit it top quality, so finely crafted. It’s not just some bake sale quality shit, these are desserts you would pay a lot of money for in a fancy bakery or coffee shop!

As their name implies, Vegan Haven Fredericton literally is a vegan heaven. Everything they sell is vegan, and delicious. Honestly when I first tasted their treats, I couldn’t believe they were vegan – not that I think vegan food is less tasty than murder, I just couldn’t believe that what I was eating was made with plants basically. So although they might not seem vegan on account of the sheer decadence they sell, they are super vegan friendly.

I love being able to go to a restaurant – or market vendor – and order absolutely anything from the menu! It’s really nice that Vegan Haven Fredericton decided to stick to a 100% vegan menu. And since the owners themselves are vegan – and have been for years – I feel confident that what I’m eating from here is actually vegan. Sometimes it can be tricky, some people don’t really know what vegan means, and accidentally serve you something they think is vegan, but actually contains butter or milk.

Since the people at Vegan Haven have been vegan for so long I trust they have their customers best interests in mind and are not just using the label ‘vegan’ because it’s popular and trending right now! They believe in what they’re selling and it definitely comes through in their delicious treats!

Atmosphere
5/5

Vegan Haven Fredericton is a market vendor at the Cultural Market here in Fredericton, NB. That being said, they don’t have a traditional store-front like some restaurants, BUT, they still have a good atmosphere! The people here are really friendly and welcoming, and don’t put you on the spot when you arrive. Interactions with them feel warm and genuine, so for me, this is all it takes to create a good atmosphere! As someone with social anxiety, I find I’ll avoid situations where I feel put on the spot, but this definitely isn’t a place I’ll be avoiding any time soon. I’ve loved our trips there so far, and I mean, how could I seriously avoid those double chocolate caramel cookies… those things are way too good to resist.

Customer Service
5/5

Although I alluded to this in the atmosphere section, this place has awesome customer service! The people at Vegan Haven are seriously so friendly and down to earth! We love interacting with these folks in person at the Cultural Market, and online through Instagram. They are so wonderful to have in this vegan community!

Right off the bat, one thing that makes their customer service so awesome is that they offer free samples of all their products. It’s so nice that they let potential customers try before they buy! Especially since they sell most of their treats in packs of 2 or 4, it’s nice to know you actually like the thing before you commit to a whole package! Although, I can speak from experience, if you try the products, you will not be able to say no to buying some, they’re just that good. So I love that they can accommodate their potential customers by letting people try all their stuff! Plus it makes for good conversation, getting to tell them how you feel about their product real time!

Even on our first visit to Vegan Haven Fredericton, they were sure to let us know that they could custom bake pretty much anything our vegan hearts desired! We did not expect to have our cravings taken so seriously! As vegans, we do sometimes miss out on the treats we used to enjoy pre-veg, just because the vegan option doesn’t exist yet! I was so excited to hear that these people could potentially make all our vegan dessert dreams come true (I’m thinking Nanaimo Bars, hint hint). It’s things like this that make Vegan Haven stand out in my eyes. They really are catering to the vegan community in a way that hasn’t been done before!

As soon as I visited Vegan Haven and saw the massive amount of treats they offer, I knew I had to try, review, and photograph them all. I mean, it’s not often you come by a cookie that is as photogenic as it is tasty. Knowing we were going to launch a blog in the near future, I messaged Vegan Haven on Instagram to ask if they could put together a little selection box for us, for the purposes of a menu / restaurant review on our blog. I really wanted to get a picture version of their menu out there, because I knew that once people SAW how glorious these treats were for themselves, they would have to want them!!

We were hoping to get one of each of their treats in a single box, rather than buying a 4 pack of each treat, just for the sake of reducing waste. I was thrilled when they said they were on board! What we really didn’t expect was for Vegan Haven to then offer this selection box to us for free! We were so grateful and appreciative of this. Geoff (half of Vegan Haven) explained to us that getting good pictures of them would be trade. We loved this because it showed how much they value what we do here on our blog and on our Instagram, ChickpeaExpress. To me, this is just another example of their genuine desire to engage with the vegan community in a positive way! Overall, Vegan Haven Fredericton has the best baked goods, and the best customer service. Seriously, these people are rad!

As of now (June, 2019) Vegan Haven sells cookies, cupcakes, whoopie pies, tarts, cinnamon rolls and frogs (if you’re not from the maritimes you might call them macaroons). I’ll post their full menu below in the Price section. For a vendor just starting out, this is a huge selection. When I visited them on their first day in business, I expected there to be whoopie pies, and maybe one or two more things. I was okay with there only being a few options, like I said earlier, the whoopie pie samples alone were enough to drag me out of bed on Saturday morning. Even still, I was shocked at the range they had. There were too many different samples I didn’t even know where to start. Even after two visits I still don’t think I’ve managed to try all their samples.

Not only do they have a wide range of desserts, they also have the BEST range of desserts. Geoff is from Dalhousie, NB, not far from where I grew up in Miramichi, NB. Because of this, many of Vegan Haven’s treats bring me back to my childhood, where I used to consume copious amounts of maritime inspired treats, like frogs and whoopie pies. I love how relatable their products are. They aren’t fancy, extravagant, or over the top; they’re a vegan take on the classics we all love!

It melted my heart a little when I commented on their new menu item on Instagram, chocolate macaroons, saying “finally! Vegan frogs!!” and they commented back “finally! Someone else who calls them frogs!” It just hit so close to home! Perfect example of how Vegan Haven’s treats are nostalgic and classic af!

Price

Thank you Vegan Haven Fredericton for supplying the city with affordable vegan treats, that feel way too classy for the price you pay. Treats here range from $2.75 to $6.00. We think this is a pretty fair price, especially considering the consistent high quality and taste of these treats! We – like most vegans – are used to the vegan options being much more expensive than their murder counterparts, so it’s nice to not have to break the bank to get some goods, sans cruelty.

Their current price list is as follows:

  • Chocolate Chip Cookies: 4 for $5.75
  • Double Chocolate Caramel Cookies: 4 for $5.75
  • Chocolate Macaroons (AKA Frogs): 4 for $5.75
  • Chocolate Cupcakes: 1 for $2.75
  • Whoopie Pies: 4 for $6.00
  • Lemon, Blueberry & Lime Tarts: 2 for $5.00
  • Cinnamon Rolls: 2 for $4.50
